Trip to DC!
Just back from a trip to DC! Program included apt visits and future pre-schools for Amélie. We had a great time during the day, but the nights were really tough, Amélie did not sleep well waking up at every new noise, which of course occur quite often when you are in a new space...
Let's focus on the fun parts though :)...
Amélie loved her new dress (thank you Vovò), as well as her new Trunki that we could use to pull her along the way:

The highlight of the trip for Amélie was to visit the Air and Space Museum, she was so excited! We explored lots of different things there:

We also played a lot on the National Mall:

We paid a visit to the Red Panda at the Zoo:

And had Japanese Food at the Airport - twice:

Overall a fantastic weekend, can't wait to move to DC for real!

New pictures and stories from the cornfields

Halloween 2010!
Ah Trick or Treating, such a fun time - Amélie chose to be 'Thumbelina' this year, and went to lots of fun activities with her dad, as I was driving back from the Net Impact Conference:
Amélie got a pumpkin painted on her face (she was very impressed by the bunny ears):

She did tons of crafts at the museum of World Cultures, she really enjoyed it:

She also took the time to write her name on her candy brown bag:

And finally she went for a few door to door trick or treating with friends:

She was so tired when she got home, I put her in bed and she was asleep before I was even out of her room!

Fall Activities
With October comes pumpkin carving time! Here are some snapshots from our pumpkin-esque adventures:
It all starts with a trip to the pumpkin patch:

Particularly liked the tractor trip there:

Then lots of fun carving with dad:
And seeing the results of the carving shine in the night:

So much fun in fact that we had to carve another one, and decorate it too:

Amélie liked the pumpkin stuff all right, but that was nothing compared to her happiness getting an M&M sugar cookie:

Amélie in quiet time
Each weekend day, we ask Amélie to stay in her room for an hour of quiet time. Generally she whines, and doesn't want to stay very long, then finds ways to ask for a drink or help to do something or another...
Today though, she has been in her room for over an hour, listening to Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus, and Beyoncé... Just hanging out, singing and dancing in her room on her own.
Pretty impressive, and as I was downstairs listening, I was thinking that this was pretty much a preview of the teenage years...

More pictures from the summer
Here are some more pictures from our summer:
Summer treat for Amélie - a spongebob squarepants ice cream:

Amélie is getting better and better at writing her shopping list of dad:

Merf and Amélie went for a ride during Merf's Birthday:

Cool style borrowed from school:

Movie date with mom (and THE popcorn - fyi, this is a medium popcorn...):

Also, mom pretended to know how to grill stuff:

We've been really lucky with the weather it's still quite warm these days, and we are taking advantage of being outside as much as possible!

News and Vacation pictures
The end of the summer is fast approaching (classes at the university are starting on Monday!)... This past month has been quite busy for us, including the following events:
Amélie earned her white belt with black stripe at TKD:

And we went on a VACATION on the shore of Lake Michigan (Union Pier to be precise) - Great quiet spots, nice beaches, and a hot tub, who can ask for more??

More pictures from our trip soon!

On Aging...
a: Mommy I want to drive our car, for real!
M: Well, when you are 16 I will teach you how to drive, you can't drive our car for real before then!
a: You and daddy are old enough to drive?
M: Yes, I am 37, so I am old enough to drive.
a: Oh I thought you were 100!
Thanks for the pep talk kid!

July Summary
OK OK we are the worst, no new posts in a month, how bad is that!!!
As a picture is worth a 1,000 words, here we go:
Vovo was here:

We had fun at the zoo and touched the sharks:

We got one of the best inventions from Capitalism (after DisneyWorld) - the pony from Build-A-Bear-Workshop:

And we went to Tae-Kwondo:

Lots of fun!

News from the corn fields
It's been way too long since we last posted news from the corn fields! Sorry to our readers for this laps in news and pictures, it's not that our lives have turned boring, it's more that I wish days would have 36 hours!
Anyway, here are some of the highlights:
Amélie got her yellow belt:

She is getting better and better with her technique and with her attention span, it's great to see her having so much fun and getting better!
We also retired Amélie's tricycle for a real bike with training wheels - it came in a box:

It took about 20 minutes to put together, and Amélie has been loving her big girl bike:

Of course, it's been the World Cup, and here is a father/daughter scene that says it all:
Here is also a duo with me around her favorite song:
And of course, summer means going to the swimming pool, she is loving it:

She is almost ready for swimming lessons!

Week in Pictures
Here are the latest news from the trenches:
We went to the birthday of a friend -theme? Superheros, so here is our BATGIRL in a taekwondo move:

After months of refusing to wear this dress because it was green, her majesty decided to give the dress a try. When picking it up in her closet, she said 'it smells just like my vovo, I want to see vovo!' - The dress was a smashing hit at school and surely has many happy days of outdoor cirque du soleil training ahead:

We baked a chocolate cake - the best part? Licking the spatula:

She is writing better and better (merci pour le tableau mutti mutti et Aicha!!):

We are also warming up for the upcoming world cup:

Latest Career Thoughts
This morning:
a: Mommy, when I grow up I will be a rock star!
M: Oh WOW, that sounds great. What do you think a rock star does?
a: I don't know!
15 minutes later:
a: Mommy, when I grow up, I want to be a mom!
M: OK, you can be many different things when you are a grown up, maybe you can be a rock star and then a mom, that would be easier because a lot of rock stars are going on trips a lot.
a: Good idea mom, I'll travel and then be a mom!
M: Awesome idea!
Throughout the conversation, memories of the 'Runaways' movie came to mind... Decided to keep THE talk about rock star lifestyle for later...

Latest Pix and stories
Ah long time without posts, so here are our latest adventures en vrac:
Mother's Day Weekend -
On Sat, I went to Tae Kwondo Class with Amélie, lots of fun, and Amélie was ecstatic that her mom was in class with her.
On Sunday, Daddy had to travel so we had breakfast entre filles:

Then we went to the Buddhist Center, where we met our friend Merf. We were there to help them with decorating their garden for the Dalai Lama's visit. As they didn't have a job for us to do, we ended up just enjoying the temple garden:

This weekend was super rainy, so we decided to go to the Children's Museum, for Amélie to enjoy her favorite attraction - The Carousel:

Lots of rain coming down again today, it's good for the garden!

What it's all about!
We have had a lot of tough times trying to instill in our little one that it's not all about her, but about how we help each other in our house...
I think we achieved a breakthrough today, in the car on our way back from after Amélie's Tae Kwondo lesson:
a: Daddy, can we go to Wonderlab now??
D: Amélie, maybe we can go another time, now we have to go home and do quiet time so that we can have fun this afternoon.
a: But I want to go to Wonderlab NOW (I am sure you can hear the tone, just in between whiny and supplicant, with that hint of teary eyes etc)!!!
D: Well Amélie, we can't go to Wonderlab now, but if you help a lot, we can go later. We already took you to Tae Kwondo today, it's not all about you!!
a: It's not all about you either Dad!!! It's about the WORLD!!!
OK see, now that's progress :)! Dad even has high hopes that these are the seeds of Amélie becoming a global citizen... I must say that in my end, I think it's wishful thinking, but hey balanced optimism is allowed!

Les nouvelles aventures d'Amélie
Now that it's getting warmer, we can take Amélie for outdoors activities almost every day. The big new one? SOCCER!!!
Yes, fans, when you marry a Brazilian, the question is not whether your kid's life will include soccer, but when will the kid start kicking and score his/her first goal... So here it is, the first goal of our Amélie:
I love the enthusiastic 'encouragement' from dad in the background :)...

What kids learn?
In princess and the frog:
Young man: Charlotte, do you want to dance now? You said later!
Charlotte: When a woman says later, she really means not ever!
Ok, now scene from the bath tonight:
D: OK Amélie, let's wash your hair!
A: Daddy, later please!
D: OK in a minute.
A minute later:
