Brazilian Portuguese lesson for mommy

Today in the car:

D: Hey Amélie, diz para mamae que voce gosta da musica da Bebel!
a: Mommy, I really like the music with BEBEL (with the Brazilian pronunciation - which to novices like her mom, sounds like BEBE-OU)
D: No, not BEBE-OU, BEBEOU, like BRAZIOU (that in fact is written BRAZIL but pronounced in a strange way to my novice ears...)
M (totally making fun now): Oh, BEBE-OU (with accentuated French Accent on the 'OU')!
a: no mommy, BEBEOU!
D: see mommy, BEBEOU!
M: oh, ok, BEBEOU (more or less)!
a: yeah, GREAT JOB Mommy (with of course the over excitement that her parents display when saying this to her)!

Keeping in mind that she is only 2 and a bit years, I guess that means many more pronunciation lessons are ahead for all of us!

Potty training...

Amélie is in the process of deciding whether she still wants to wear diapers or not... Some days she absolutely wants one, some days, she claims being a big girl and wants to wear undies... We oblige and tell her how proud we are that she is now a big girl when she wants to wear undies without diapers, and go completely overboard with expressions of joys when she uses the potty for #1 or #2! Of course, some days, we have a lot more stinky laundry as a result...

One day this week, Amélie asked me to put a diaper and an undie on in the morning, so I did. When we went to pick her up at the end of the day, her teacher told us that when she had her diaper changed in the morning, she said to him: "No more diapers for me!"... So her teacher obliged. Back in her classroom, Amélie proclaimed: "I am a big girl now, no more diapers for me!"

All the kids in her class apparently cheered and each of the kids went to give Amélie a big hug... Her teacher said he had never seen this happen before! That day, Amélie used the potty 4 times during the day, and had no accident, so there is hope...

She is still going back and forth with the diaper thing, and having accidents, but hopefully she will be potty trained before she has to write her college essays... On Friday, her teacher told us that she spent 45 minutes on the potty, which is the longest time Amélie has been in one spot since she was able to roll over at 5 months, so we consider that a great step in the right direction!

Week in Review

We are happy to report that since we have been back home, Amélie has been sleeping like a brick... She is definitely a little one that loves routines and her own bed!

This week has been filled with fun activities:

Hanging out with friends in our house while the mommys went out to stimulate the economy on Black Friday:

Asking my mom to give me a haircut (she asked twice today to have her hair cut again, mommy only pretended to cut, not wanting to make the disaster worse...):

(FYI - the little white things around her mouth are not rabies symptoms, just a little of the yogourt she was then eating)

Playing with mom and dad to build towers:

And also getting into the Holiday spirit:

Trip to DC... Trial #4!

Last week we all went to DC, on a valiant attempt to test whether our last visit was an outlier or not...

We had a really good plan:
* Hotel reserved close to the Zoo - packed warm jackets for fall in DC
* Plans for lunch, dinner and days with friends who recently moved to DC or were in DC for the conference
* DVD Player for the plane with the new Kung Fu Panda DVD bought for the trip

We were all set for a bit of R&R and lots of animal discoveries...

The best surprise was that Amélie blew her parents away by being an angel in the plane:

The surprises kept coming, but weren't so nice... Let's compare our original plan with what the trip ended up being:

* Hotel reserved close to the Zoo - packed warm jackets for fall in DC
Amélie turns out to be a total homebody, she asked to go back to the big plane to go home and sleep in her crib everyday...
The weather was freezing... After buying gloves, hats and a big blankie to be able to go outside, we still had to have a strategic series of stops between the hotel and the zoo (2 starbucks stops and way too many chocolate milk necessary to cover the distance). Best part of the Zoo for Amélie? Pandas? Gorillas? NOPE! The construction site for the new elephant trail:

She might be on her way to become an engineer and design diggers. The construction workers were from time to time looking up at us, clearly wondering what we were doing there for so long in that cold...

* Plans for lunch, dinner and days with friends who recently moved to DC or were in DC for the conference
Amélie caught a pink eye on the first day we were in DC, add to that a nasty cold that she then proceeded to share with her daddy. As most of our friends in DC either have small kids or a pregnant, most visits/meet-ups were canceled... Big SNIF from maman...

* DVD Player for the plane with the new Kung Fu Panda DVD bought for the trip
Biggest hit ever! The DVD player was extensively used in the plane and the hotel room! This time, we even let Amélie watch her DVDs in her stroller on our way to the restaurant and in the restaurant while having dinner one evening...

In sum, we had a pretty unhappy camper, and we now have a maman with pretty short amounts of patience left... These days, maman's mantra is dictated by the Monty Python:

In conclusion, accumulating evidence indicates that future trip frequency might decrease...

Drinking with Daddy!

Last night, Amélie wanted to pretend she was a baby, and wanted to drink her milk like a baby...

Daddy obliged:

Which of course prompted a trip down memory lane, with Daddy starting the bottle when Amélie was about 7 weeks old:

Daddy and Amélie when she was 10 months old:

That was, of course, before Amélie reached the 'me do it' phase of things:

But no matter what stage of drinking she is in, her daddy is, for Amélie, clearly the best person to drink with!

It's My BAMA Day!

This morning, we were trying to teach Amélie the name of the new President elect...

We were trying to get her to say: 'it's Obama Day'!!
Instead, we got 'It's my BAMA day'... Followed by 'It's everyone's BAMA day'! Good enough :)...

But friends, does it feel good to live in a BLUE state again :)))))!

Happy Halloween!

This year, oh surprise given her obsession with them, Amélie decided she wanted to be a kitty for Halloween!

Sorry for those of you who voted for the soccer player, I really thought she would go for it, but at the end, the idea of having a tail won!

She has been taking her mask, ears and tail to sleep with every day since Friday... Amélie went trick-or-treating with Yang Yang (as a dog) and Rena (as a ballerina) from her day care. They all had a blast taking turns in the wagon or pulling the wagon. Fun times!

As many of you, we are now trying to minimize the occurrences of sugar-induced frenzies!

Amélie loves playing and singing

Daddy brought back a great DVD of Brazilian songs from friends he saw at a conference. Amélie absolutely loves the DVD, and doesn't want to watch anything else these days... Many thanks for this great DVD!

Here is a little episode of her exuberant way of watching TV and singing:

Cats don't make dogs!

Amélie playing with her new car!

Oops, not really, that was dad actually! Dad here as well:

Well, there is a family resemblance, but Amélie is much prettier!

Pre-Halloween ideas!

Amélie has been experimenting with ideas for Halloween these days:

Will she be a soccer player from Flamengo?

Or will she be in a 'Cirque du Soleil' outfit (monkey tumbles included)?

Or do you prefer her as a little kitty?

Cast your Votes :)!

Car games...

In the car on the way to day care:

a: Mommy, I am hiding, count! Amélie covers her eyes with her arms, which means she is now invisible!
And pretending I have no idea that the little one is in her car seat...
D: Onde esta o meu pingulinho? Also pretending that he can't see her...
a: Peek-a-boo (removing her arms, and squealing in delight)!

Now that she is visible again, dad catches her foot and pretends to tickle her, making her squeal even more...

a: Funny!
M: Yeah your daddy is funny!
a: No, not daddy, ME!

New Doctors visits!

OK, so imagine the happy family, joyfully on their way to brunch on Saturday morning, and here we are, swinging Amélie by her arms so that she can put her feet way up towards the sky...

All was well until mom feels a snap in her left wrist... Followed by Amélie whaling like we rarely heard before and not wanting anyone to go near her arm!

Next step? Of course, straight to the doctor, who thought it was nursemaid elbow... Manipulated the arm to put the elbow back together, and here we are on our way back home, with a kid that is really unhappy in her car seat...

During the afternoon on Saturday, Amélie did not want to leave the sofa, and was totally against anyone coming close to her arm...

On Sunday, it became clear that the elbow manipulation didn't work so well, so we went to the Doc again... An X-Ray and number of hours later, nothing new, and we were sent home with a sling:

As we weren't able to undress her otherwise, we cut her U of Rochester T-Shirt to remove it, Amélie was not so happy about putting a jacket on instead, but hey, c'est la vie!

On Monday, she stayed with Dad on the sofa all day:

But in the evening, a miracle happened, she motioned towards her new table to eat strawberries, and even smiled:

From there she tentatively walked around, but was still not very upbeat... The next day, we avoided the dressing effort by resorting to a poncho look that she was thrilled with:

On Wed Amélie seemed a bit better and stayed at day care for the whole day. Today she was back to her old self, although she still doesn't fully use her left arm...

These last few days, she has been quick at reminding everyone that her mom did hurt her, and that it was painful, and fully playing the gilt card, asked mom repeatedly for 'purple ice cream' with begging eyes... She has had more purple ice cream in these last few days than in her whole life...

Amélie and Merf!

Amélie and Merf have been playing together since they were babies.

As they grow, their games are becoming more complex, and very funny to watch:

Anniversaire et autres aventures

Le weekend dernier c'était l'anniversaire de ma maman, et on lui a offert un gâteau aux carottes:

Pas de bougies mais elle a quand même fait un voeu ;)...

Vendredi pour son anniversaire maman a demandé à aller à la collecte de fonds pour Wonderlab (thème: nuit venitienne):

Le lendemain nous sommes bien entendu tous allés à Wonderlab:

New pix!

Favorite food?? Green tomatoe:

Pretend play? Going on a trip:

Favorite sport? Biking:

Mom and dad also love when she sleeps, but don't have pix for that because just knowing she is in her crib is good enough for them!

Logic

Amelie is not Terence Tao, but today she demonstrated her first logical deduction. Well, not quite but...

Dad: Amelie, take your hat from your mouth, it's dirty.
Amelie: Doggy pee in the hat (giggles).
Dad: What?
Amelie: Doggy pee in the hat (giggles).
Dad: Huh??
Mom explains: Earlier, during our walk with Sofia, Amelie wanted to touch the fire hydrant, to which she was told, "don't do that, it's dirty, dogs pee on fire hydrants..."

By the way, is this modus ponens or modus tollens??

Merf's birthday

Today we went to Merf's birthday in our best dress:

Merf and Amélie had so much fun, I can't wait to post more pictures!

Do it all by myself!

Amelie wants to do everything all by herself (ABH) these days... Some things we can let her do (ie pour milk in her cereal ABH, fold her clothes ABH, put baby in the crib to go night night ABH... And get in her car seat ABH:

This ABH stuff has limits of course, but as you can imagine, she already tried to convince us that she can drive ABH, she can ride mom's bike ABH and she wants to go downstairs to the basement ABH...

She of course let us know very clearly when she is unhappy with what we (ie the parents or laws of gravity) teach her about things she can do or not do... Interesting that the same reaction comes our way whether the request is about brushing teeth or about flying like birds... In sum, we can't wait for the pre-frontal to kick in so that she can know that gravity is tougher than parents in terms of what one can't do!

Pitreries chez les Pessoas!

Our little one is turning into a little clown...

Playing with string cheese -
PEEKABOO:

I SEE YOU:

Trying to look as cool as daddy (nice try sweetie, but it will take more than putting his shoes on to get there):

More fun with daddy:

Rocking/strangling mommy to sleep:

Overall, great potential for standup comedy!
